Side Note: What to expect if you’re used to Walt Disney World
Heading to Disneyland for the first time after being a Disney World regular? Get ready for a cozy and nostalgic experience! Unlike the sprawling Disney World, Disneyland is compact and easy to explore on foot. You’ll find classic rides that Walt Disney himself created, unique dining options, and intimate character interactions. Embrace the charm and don’t let the smaller castle get you down! For a more in depth look at how these Disney parks differ from each other, check out this post.
When to Visit the Disneyland Resort
When it comes to planning your visit to Disneyland, timing is key to ensure a magical experience with shorter wait times and pleasant weather. Here are some of the factors I consider when helping clients choose the best time to visit:
Off Season
To avoid large crowds, consider visiting during off-peak seasons. Generally, weekdays outside of major holidays and school vacation periods tend to be less crowded. This includes times like January and February (excluding Presidents Day), late April to early May, and September to early November (excluding Halloween). Keep in mind that some events, promotions, or new attractions may affect crowd levels, so it’s always a good idea to check the official Disneyland Resort website for any upcoming events.
Shoulder Seasons
Surprisingly, the periods just before and after peak seasons and holidays can be a very favorable time to visit. These include late August to early September and late November to early December. You can often enjoy milder weather and reduced crowds during these times. You may also consider arriving on the day of a national holiday (like President’s Day or Labor Day for instance) because that’s when most people will be leaving.
Spring and Fall Seasons
Both spring and fall generally offer pleasant weather in Anaheim, making these seasons popular choices. Springtime brings beautiful blooms, while fall offers mild temperatures and festive decorations during Halloween and the holiday season.
Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure Park
Disneyland Resort in California consists of two amazing theme parks – Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure Park. Disneyland Park is the original park that started it all but Disney California Adventure Park is right next door! With so much to see and do in both places, it’s important to plan your itinerary in advance. In general, I would plan for 2-3 days of park time so you can see and do it all!
Disneyland Guide
Disneyland Park is divided into nine themed lands. Don’t worry, I know this sounds like a lot but it’s really not bad! Everything is close together and easy to get to. Let’s look at what’s included in each one.

Main Street USA
Step back in time and enjoy a charming thoroughfare lined with Victorian architecture, quaint shops, and delightful eateries. As you stroll, indulge in delicious treats and soak in the nostalgic atmosphere that captures the essence of a bygone era. This land doesn’t include any rides but you can find lots of great souvenirs and yummy snacks.

Enter a realm of enchantment in Fantasyland, where fairy tales come to life. Embark on a magical journey through Sleeping Beauty Castle, take flight with “Dumbo the Flying Elephant”, and experience classic Disney tales on attractions like “Peter Pan’s Flight” and “it’s a small world”. This is a great land for toddlers because most of the rides do not have a height requirement.

Soar through space on the thrilling “Hyperspace Mountain” roller coaster, encounter aliens on “Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters”, and witness the possibilities of technology on attractions like “Star Tours: The Adventures Continue”. Guide to Disneyland Hotels
When it comes to accommodations, Disneyland Resort offers three enchanting Disney hotels – Disneyland Hotel, Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa, and Disney’s Paradise Pier Hotel (soon to be Pixar Place Hotel). Staying at a Disney hotel is a magical experience in itself, with themed rooms, excellent dining options, and convenient proximity to the parks. You will also get some other special perks, such as early admission to the parks which will allow you to enjoy select attractions before the parks open to the general public. Let’s take a closer look at each one.
Disneyland Hotel
Disneyland Hotel is a classic Victorian-style hotel that’s just steps away from both Disneyland Resort parks. It features beautiful gardens, a stunning pool area (with monorail slides!), and a variety of dining options, including the popular character dining experience at Goofy’s Kitchen. This is my personal favorite because it pays homage to so many classic Disney films and rides that Walt worked on himself!
Grand Californian
Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa is a deluxe hotel that’s inspired by the Arts and Crafts movement of the early 20th century. It offers a luxurious spa, beautiful pools, and direct access to Disney California Adventure Park through a private entrance. If you’re wanting upscale Disney, a lodge vibe, and super convenient access to the parks, this is the hotel for you! Additionally, the Grand Californian has an amazing character breakfast buffet at Storyteller’s Cafe… be sure to check it out!

Paradise Pier
Disney’s Paradise Pier Hotel is a charming hotel with a beach-themed decor, perfect for families with young kids. It features a rooftop pool with a waterslide, a fitness center, and a playful restaurant called Surf’s Up! Breakfast with Mickey & Friends. This is a less expensive option since you are a little farther away from the parks but still very convenient!
Downtown Disney
When you’re ready for a break from the parks, head over to Downtown Disney, a vibrant shopping, dining, and entertainment district located right between Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure Park.
Dining
Downtown Disney offers a wide range of dining options, from quick-service restaurants to upscale dining experiences. You can indulge in delicious treats like beignets from Jazz Kitchen Express, enjoy a meal with a view at Naples Ristorante e Bar, or have a fun family dinner at Rainforest Cafe. I must say that lunch at Naples was my favorite dining experience when I visited Disneyland last summer! It was delicious!
Shopping
Downtown Disney also offers an array of unique shops and boutiques where you can find Disney merchandise, souvenirs, and trendy fashion items. The LEGO store is by far our favorite one to check out!
Entertainment
You can also catch live entertainment, such as live music performances or street performers, as you stroll through the district. Many of the restaurants also offer live music throughout the week.
Final Thoughts on Downtown Disney
Downtown Disney is the perfect place to unwind, relax, and enjoy some downtime with your family, while still being immersed in the all the Disney magic. In my opinion, the best part about the Disneyland Resort is the proximity of all the experiences to each other! For instance, if you are staying at the Disneyland Hotel, you will walk right through Downtown Disney to get to the front gates of both parks. It really couldn’t be any more convenient or centrally located!

Conclusion of the Complete Disneyland Guide
In conclusion, Disneyland Resort offers a world of excitement and wonder for families with kids of all ages.
